Introduction
Preparing to pack your baggage before you travel is important, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. Here are some useful tips & advice helping you navigate through the rules & requirements that apply on baggage when travelling by airplane.
Hand baggage & check-in baggage: Choosing at the reservation stage whether you are going to need hold baggage is important. Check if hold baggage is included in your reservation or if it is offered in additional charge. Verify the hold baggage specifications applying to your reservation, as they may vary according to the class chosen / options related to your ticket (Economy, Business or First class).
Hand luggage specifications may vary amongst airlines, in terms of how many items you may have, size & weight. Check them with your airline before departure.
Packing your hand baggage: Take into consideration the rules about prohibited & regulated items that apply due to security reasons.
- Liquids: If you have liquids, they must be in containers under 100 ml and placed in a resealable 1-liter bag in your carry-on baggage. You are only permitted 1 bag per person. You can view more here.
- Medications
- Baby food: As baby food is exempt from liquid restrictions, you are allowed to bring more than 100 ml, covering the needs for the entire journey.
- Sharp objects, such as knives & scissors with blades longer than 6cm, are not allowed. See details in your airline’s website or HCAA - List of Prohibited Articles.
- Dangerous goods such as gas, nail polish removers, poison, corrosives, explosives, flammable liquids, magnetized material, radioactive material, are not allowed. See details in your airline’s website or HCAA - List of Prohibited Articles.
- Electronics: you may carry electronic devices on board. Please check your airline’s exact specifications for carrying lithium batteries on board. More information can be found ΙΑΤΑ - Traveling with Portable Electronic Devices(PEDs).
Charge your devices before you fly- If you can't turn your devices on, you may not be able to take them on board. You can charge them for free at various points around the airport. - Stroller/Baby travel bed/Baby car seat: Check with your airline the terms of carrying child-specific bulky baggage, such as strollers, baby travel beds or child car seats. Please contact your airline directly for more information.

Hold baggage specifications vary depending on your flight, fare & class of service. Check with your airline before you select your suitcase.
Pay attention to the maximum authorized weight for your reservation. In case you exceed it, you will have to pay excess baggage charge.
Packing restrictions
Some items are not allowed to carry while you are travelling by airplane even in the hold of the plane, they are considered dangerous for air transport. Dangerous goods category includes items such as gas, nail polish removers, poison, corrosives, explosives, flammable liquids, magnetized material, radioactive material. If you are going to travel to a country outside the European Union, check the conditions for carrying alcohol, tobacco, plants, animal derived products, animals.
- Plan ahead what you are going to pack in order to avoid last minute stress.
- Try to pack only what you really need depending on your destination, local weather, days to spend.
- Take into consideration the security restrictions applying in air travel (rules for liquids, sharp objects, dangerous goods).
- It is strongly recommended to pack your vital medications in your carry-on luggage. You won’t risk being without them in case your hold baggage is delayed.
- Pack any valuables, such as jewelry, important documents, money etc. in your hand baggage rather than in your hold baggage.
- Label your bag with your name & contacts.
- Remove all baggage tags and barcodes from previous trips.
- Bring copies of all your travel documents & 1-2 spare passport photos.
- Keep a copy of any medical prescriptions you may need in your hand baggage.
- Never leave your baggage unattended, it will be considered suspicious and will be removed.
- Never accept to carry any bags or packages from a stranger for any reason.
