ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM according to ISO 14001 for Athens International Airport S.A
Athens International Airport S. A. (AIA) was certified according to the international environmental standard EN ISO 14001 for its Environmental Management System & Services. The new airport of Athens is the first Greek airport, and among other 15 in Europe to be certified. It is worth mentioning that the new Athens airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" was the first airport in the world to be certified before its commencement.
Athens International Airport S.A., acknowledging the importance of maintaining and improving environmental quality in Mesogaia area, has implemented a range of measures and actions in its Environmental Management System (EMS) that assure the continual improvement of its environmental performance. The necessary infrastructure for the monitoring of environmental aspects has already been installed, and the relevant environmental audit procedures are followed.
Environmental protection is of great importance for the Airport Company. Therefore, the "Environment & Quality Department" (ENC) was established since the first day of the company's formation (June 1996). ENC is responsible for the Management of Air Quality, Noise Abatement, Waste and Water Management, Nature Conservation, Environmental Auditing, the protection of our Cultural Heritage, and finally Public's Environmental Awareness. In order to achieve that, special terms were included in every contract with companies operating within the airport, thus reassuring that that all member of the airport community will effectively contribute in the environmental protection.
DQS Hellas Ltd. was the certification body for the Airport Company. Certification was obtained in December 2000. Dr. Charalampos N. Kavouras, Environmental Auditor of the Airport Company, is in change for the Environmental Management System, while Mr. Lampros I. Bouklis, consultant in environmental matters, also participated in designing the system.
