Once again, Athens Airport has been voted the top airport in Europe by airlines! At this year's largest annual meeting of the European air transport industry, 'Routes Europe 2024' (April 22-24), held in Aarhus, Denmark, Athens Airport reclaimed the first place for its strategic marketing and efforts to develop the Athens market, in the category of over 20 million passengers!

AIA has won the Best Airport Award for 2023 by ACI Europe (Barcelona, June 26-28) in the competitive 25-40 million passengers category.

Athens International Airport has been chosen as the most efficient airport in the 10-20 million passengers category in Europe. The results were obtained following a year-long research effort by the ATRS Global Airport Benchmarking Task Force. The ceremony was held in Kobe, Japan, in July 1-4.

The airport of Athens was once again at the top of Europe, with the votes of the airlines! At this year's resumption – after the interruption of the pandemic – of the largest annual meeting of the European aviation industry "Routes Europe 2023" held in Łódź, Poland, Athens Airport again won first place for its marketing strategy and actions to the development of the Athens market, in the category of more than 20 million passengers!

The continuous cooperation between Athens International Airport and Benaki Museum received 1st prize in the category «Cultural Events/Periodic Exhibitions». Moreover, the Treasure Hunt, an innovative concept for promoting culture within the Airport, through modern digital tools, has won the 1st prize in the category «Technology Enhanced Experience».

Athens International Airport has earned the 2023 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Award for Best Airport of 25 to 40 Million Passengers in Europe! The passengers have spoken and recognized the successful efforts of AIA's team in providing a superior customer experience!
The ceremony will be held in Seoul, South Korea, in September 4-7.

Once again, at the largest meeting of the aviation industry "ROUTES WORLD 2022" held in Las Vegas, Athens airport won the first place, in this year's highly competitive category of 10-17.5 million passengers, with the votes of the airlines.

The Annual ACI EUROPE Best Airport Awards winners were announced on the 24th of June 2022, during the Gala Dinner of the 32nd ACI EUROPE Annual Congress and General Assembly, taking place in Rome, Italy, and hosted by Aeroporti di Roma.
The Best Airport Awards recognise excellence and outstanding achievement across the entire portfolio of airport activities. This year has been characterised by both the many ways in which airports are recovering after COVID-19 pandemic and the increasing focus on sustainability-related achievements. Athens Airport was higly commended in the 25-40 million passengers category.

Athens International Airport was named Best Airport in Europe in the category of airports with 25-40 million passengers (based on the passenger traffic of 2019), for its overall operation during the pandemic period, but also for the implementation of innovative digital services for the passenger public and its constant commitment to its environmental goals. The award ceremony was held in Geneva, in the context of the annual Conference and the General Assembly of ACI Europe which was the first to take place with physical presence after 2019. 

Athens International Airport was the most efficient airport among European airports that serve 10-25 million passengers per year, for 2019, and was awarded in the 2020 ATRS Global Airport Efficiency Awards, held virtually in July.

AIA was presented the Corporate Affairs Excellence Award for the 2018 Annual & Sustainability Report. It is an important distinction for a significant corporate activity by a prominent and well-respected institution. It is worth mentioning that for this year’s awards, the evaluation process was audited and certified by Deloitte.

During World Routes 2019, the biggest global networking route development annual forum, (Adelaide, September 21-24) Athens International Airport received one more significant distinction, voted by airlines as “Highly Commended” in the competitive 20-50 million passengers category.

Athens International Airport proved to be the most efficient airport among European airports that serve 10-25 million passengers per year, and was awarded -yet for another year- the 2019 ATRS Global Airport Efficiency Award, in a ceremony held in Amsterdam on July 2-5.

Athens Airport was celebrating last night, after scooping the Routes Europe 2019 Marketing Award in Hannover. The Greek gateway took the winning title in the over 20 million annual passenger category.

The innovative three-year cooperation between Athens International Airport, Benaki Museum, and Costa Navarino for the international promotion of Greek culture, received 1st prize in the category «Strategy & Innovation / Tourism & Culture».

Another special and important distinction for Customer Satisfaction: ACI World’s globally established ASQ Awards, recognizing AIA's successful efforts in providing superior customer experience, awarded Athens International Airport top position in Europe in the category 15-25 million passengers.

For a consecutive year, Athens International Airport has been honored in the 2019 Loyalty Awards, receiving the Silver award for its parking loyalty programme (Park & Win). The competition took place with the participation of all the well-known brands and loyalty programmes of the Greek market. The ceremony has hosted in Gazarte on April 2019.

Athens International Airport has been honored once again in the ATRS 2017 with the 1st award for its top efficiency performance among European airports that serve 10-25 million passengers per year. The award was presented during the 2017 ATRS World Conference held in Antwerp, Belgium.

During the annual Ermis Awards, the top institution to reward creativity in Marketing and Communications in Greece, the novelty of the Athens airport B2B campaign under the title "Aviation marketing delivered in a novel way", was honoured with

• Gold Award for “Branded Entertainment & Content” in the category Use or Integration of Printed Content

• Silver Award for “Direct” in the category Direct Marketing / Business to Business

The campaign "Aviation marketing delivered in a novel way" was created in cooperation with advertising agency J. Walter Thompson Athens.

The Αthens International Airport, Pulitzer-prize winning Reuters photographer Yannis Behrakis, and "Médecins Sans Frontières", received an honorary award for the exhibition "People on the Move" presenting the journey of refugees fleeing from war in their countries in search of a better life.

Airlines honour Athens International Airport with one more top distinction! During World Routes 2016, the biggest global networking route development annual forum, Athens International Airport was voted by the airlines as the winner in the 4-20 m. passengers’ category. This 22nd World Route Development Forum was held in Chengdu / China (September 24-27) with the participation of 3,500 aviation professionals (300 airlines – 700 airports).

Athens International Airport collected one more prize for its efficiency during the Air Transport Research Society (ATRS) 20th anniversary world conference in Rhodes

In “Routes Europe” 2016, the biggest airline and airport networking route development forum in Europe, AIA was voted by the airlines as the winner in the 4-20 m. passengers category. At the highly significant Routes forum, airlines evaluate the airports’ marketing plans and programmes, rewarding the ones that address most efficiently the airlines’ efforts to develop new routes and enhancing their presence in the local market.

One more significant distinction for the Athens airport: The Air Transport Research Society (ATRS) awarded AIA with the Top European Excellence in efficiency, according to the annual Global Airport Benchmarking Report, including results for airports in Asia Pacific, Europe and North America.

A new significant distinction for the Athens airport: In this year’s “Routes Europe”, the biggest airline and airport networking route development forum in Europe, AIA was voted by the airlines as the winner in the 4-20 m. passengers category in the 2015 Routes Marketing Awards, in recognition of the dynamic, tailor-made support it offers to its airline partners in their developmental efforts.

The Athens International Airport is the “Airport of the Year” in the category 10-30 million passengers In the context of the “Air Transport News 2015” awards ceremony (Geneva, March 21st), the Athens Airport won the “Airport of the Year” award in the 10-30 million passengers category. The ATN Awards are the only international prizes that award all the main categories of the air transport industry.

The Athens International Airport was awarded the silver prize in the category "Branding/Public Relations & People Strategy" for its significant contribution to the successful campaign "I Am an Aθenian" that promotes destination Athens.

World Routes 2014, the biggest annual gathering of airports and airlines, were concluded with another significant distinction for the Athens International Airport: In the context of the 20th World Route Development Forum, held in Chicago (September 20-23), with the participation of 3,000 aviation professionals (300 airlines – 800 airports), AIA, voted exclusively by airlines, was Highly Commended in the passenger category of 4-20 million pax, in recognition of its continuous, dynamic and creative support to the airlines’ developmental efforts, both during the extremely adverse conditions that the Greek economy faced, as well as in the period of recovery that started recently.

Athens International Airport (AIA) was honoured with a new distinction, for the third consecutive year, at the 10th “Stevie - International Business Awards”.

AIA received the bronze award in the category “Company of the Year-Transportation”, among over 100 companies and organisations of the aviation sector.

The “Stevie - International Business Awards” institution aims at honouring and communicating the achievements and contribution of entreprises, organisations and entrepreneurs, to the international business community, the general public and the media.

In 2013, entreprises from more than 50 countries participated in the “Stevie - International Business Awards”. The awards were presented in a special event in Barcelona, on October 14th.

“Routes Europe 2013”, Europe’s biggest airline and airport networking route development forum, was concluded with one more award for the Athens International Airport, its 12th in 9 years. During the 8th Routes Europe Forum, which was held in Budapest (May 12-14) with the participation of more than 1,000 aviation professionals, Athens International Airport was the award Winner in the 4 - 20 m. passengers category in recognition of its creativity and continuous dynamic support to its airline partners, especially in light of the extremely adverse conditions that the Greek economy is facing. Having received the airlines’ recognition for 9 consecutive years, Athens International Airport (AIA) is the most awarded airport for its airport marketing performance.

Routes Europe 2012, the biggest gathering of airports and airlines, were concluded with another distinction for the Athens International Airport, its eleventh in 8 years: specifically, during the 7th Routes Europe Conference, which, this year, was held in Tallinn – Estonia (May 20-22) with the participation of 1,000 aviation professionals, AIA was highly commended in the“Mediterranean and Southern Europe” category, in recognition of its continuous, dynamic and creative support to the airlines’ developmental efforts, especially during the extremely adverse conditions that the Greek economy is facing at the moment. It is noteworthy that, with 11 top distinctions, AIA is the most awarded airport and the only one that has been awarded continuously for 8 years in the context of the Routes Conferences.

AIA received one more distinction from its airline partners, for continuously supporting their development through its marketing programmes and developmental incentives: in the framework of the 6th Routes Europe forum held in Cagliari / Italy, with the participation of 700 aviation professionals, Athens International Airport was highly commended in the Mediterranean and Southern Europe category, in recognition of “the attitude of the airport’s marketing team, which worked hard to develop the facility through creative route development activities, during a difficult year due to the economic problems in Greece”.

In its airport assessment in the highly challenging environment of the air-transport sector, the Institute of Transport Management named Athens International Airport the title of “European Airport of the Year 2011” acknowledging AIA’s high quality customer services and superior design, its awarded marketing programmes, strong -entrepreneurship and corporate social responsibility, even amid the present difficult times for the Greek economy.

On October 30th in Doha, aviation leaders awarded Athens International Airport (AIA) with the “Airport of the Year 2010” distinction, in recognition of the high quality of services offered to airport passengers and visitors, combined with a strong and competitive business model.

This year’s World ROUTES, the biggest gathering of airports and airlines (19-21 September 2010, Vancouver) were concluded with another top distinction for Athens International Airport, its seventh award in six years. Airlines from across the globe voted AIA as the 2nd best airport in airline marketing in the European category, for supporting consistently and dynamically their development efforts and programmes.

Athens International Airport won its 6th Routes award for the financial support and innovative airport marketing programmes offered to airlines. During the «ROUTES Europe» conference that took place in Toulouse during May 9-11, Athens International Airport (AIA) was awarded as the winner in the “Mediterranean-Southern Europe” category.

Airlines honour AIA with first place in Europe
Athens International Airport (AIA) is once again the winner of the Routes Airport Marketing Awards* in the Europe category. AIA was awarded in the framework of World ROUTES 2009, the biggest gathering of airports and airlines, held in Beijing, from September 12-15. This time airlines from across the globe distinguished AIA for supporting their route development consistently and dynamically, through the airport’s wide-scale innovative marketing programmes**. During tough economic times, this new distinction has a special significance for Athens International Airport: In 2009, AIA was the only European airport with increased number of frequencies, with its airline marketing programmes having so far brought 12 new airlines to Athens in 2009 and 8 new international destinations.

For a 5th consecutive year, Europe’s airlines awarded Athens International Airport for supporting their route development consistently and dynamically, through the airport’s wide-scale innovative marketing programmes. The best airport marketing award was presented in the framework of the “ROUTES Europe” airline development forum, where AIA also won 1st place in the geographical region "Southern Europe - Mediterranean".

For the fourth consecutive year, Athens International Airport (AIA) won the OAG-Routes Airport Marketing Award for consistently and dynamically supporting airlines’ route development through the airport’s wide-scale, innovative marketing programmes*. AIA received the “OAG-Routes Airport Marketing Award” in the framework of the 14th World Route Development Forum, “ROUTES” (Kuala Lumpur October 12th-14th), this year sharing the 1st place with Brussels Airport, which also excelled for its airport marketing initiatives.

For the third consecutive year, Athens International Airport’s airline-partners rewarded the airport with the 1st OAG Airport Marketing Award 2007 at the 13th World Route Development Forum – "ROUTES 2007" in Stockholm. Praised for "maintaining its Olympic sparkle,"  AIA was awarded for its airline developmental programme resulting in 2007 to attract 12 new airlines, and add 11 new destinations, to America, Asia and Europe.

Thanks to the support of the airlines, its major partners, AIA came out top of the list at "Routes", the annual airline-airport summit meeting. It received the OAG Airport Marketing Award for its airline development programme in the 10-25 million passenger bracket.

AIA was ranked second by the Air Transport Society (ATRS) following the 10th ATRS Conference in Nagoya, Japan.

The Airlines awarded Athens International Airport top marks for its support in route development.
During the annual airport marketing awards ceremony (“OAG Airport Marketing Awards 2005”), attended by 1,700 delegates and 300 airlines from all over the world, the airport was acclaimed by the international aviation community as the top-ranking airport worldwide in its category (10 - 25 million passengers) for its airline support programme and contribution to route development.

The winner of the Best Airport Award in the 10m to 25m passenger category was Athens International Airport.
AIA was recognised for its outstanding performance during the 2004 Olympics, where despite facing a peak traffic explosion it actually managed to improve flight punctuality and other key operational performance indices.

The successful implementation of its innovative business scheme earned AIA the title of the “European Airport of the Year 2004”, granted annually by the British Institute of Transport Management (ITM).

In recognition of its contribution to the aviation industry and airline support, AIA received the 2003 Eagle Award of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

During the proceedings of the 8th World Route Development Forum “Routes, Athens 2002”, the airlines declared AIA the best airport in the world (in the 5 - 15 million passenger range) for its effectiveness in strategic marketing schemes for the development of new routes. In addition, the Athens airport marketing team was granted a special merit award for its efficiency in coping with the major challenges confronting the airport since its opening in March 2001.
