Sundarbans
BANGLADESH - INDIA
Nestled in the Sundarbans delta in the Ganges River, the world’s largest mangrove forest is a serious
contender for the top seven. Even though its architecture is no accomplishment of man, its beauty in
combination with its waterways paint a picture that has not gone unnoticed by its supporters, who call it
“The Venice of Nature”. Sundarbans is also an enormous park where the Asian Big Five can be found, as
the majestic royal Bengal tiger, crocodiles, sharks, cobras and a species of tall deer call this park home.
All of this, with the added bonus of the enormous voting potential offered by the population of Bangladesh
and India (a total of 1,3 billion people) distinguishes Sundarbans as a competition favourite. The prime
ministers of both nations have invited people to vote for Sundarbans, in the hope that a place in the top
seven will attract more tourists to the area and result in a general prosperity for this sensitive ecosystem.

επτάδα. Αν και η αρχιτεκτονική του δεν είναι έργο ανθρώπινο, η ομορφιά του, σε συνδυασμό με τους υδάτινους
δρόμους του, δημιουργούν μια αναλογία που δεν πέρασε απαρατήρητη από τους υποστηρικτές του, οι οποίοι το
αποκαλούν Βενετία της Φύσης. Είναι όμως και ένα απέραντο πάρκο, όπου βρίσκει καταφύγιο ένα «big five» δια-
φορετικό από αυτό της Αφρικής, αποτελούμενο από βασιλικές τίγρεις της Βεγγάλης, κροκόδειλους, καρχαρίες,
κόμπρες και ένα είδος ψηλού ελαφιού. Όλα αυτά, με το πρόσθετο ατού της τεράστιας δεξαμενής ψήφων που προ-
σφέρει ο πληθυσμός του Μπαγκλαντές και της Ινδίας (συνολικά 1,3 δισεκατομμύρια) δίνουν στο Sundarbans τον
αέρα του φαβορί. Εξάλλου, οι πρωθυπουργοί των δύο χωρών κάλεσαν το κοινό να ψηφίσει Sundarbans, ελπίζο-
ντας πως μια θέση στην επτάδα θα φέρει όχι μόνο τουρίστες αλλά και ευημερία για το ευαίσθητο οικοσύστημα.
