In 2023, Athens International Airport witnessed a total of 241.6 thousand lights, marking a 13.2% increase
compared to 2022 and a 7.1% increase compared to 2019. Both domestic and international lights
exceeded 2019 levels by 10.5% and 4.6%, respectively, relecting a full Post-Covid-19 recovery.
Reviewing aircraft movements since 2019, 2023 exhibits a consistent seasonality pattern, characterised
by a lower number of lights in the irst quarter, accounting for 17% of the total number of lights, while
approximately 60% of total lights occur during both the second and third quarters each year since 2019.
The inal quarter concludes the year, representing the remaining 23%.
In 2023, Western Europe maintained its position as the most served region, accounting for 69.4% of all
aircraft movements. Eastern Europe followed with a market share of 12.8%, lower than the 15.4% recorded
in 2019 due to the impact of light bans imposed due to the Russian-Ukrainian war. The Middle East held a
share of 10.3%, while other regions accounted for less than 4% of aircraft movements each.
Regarding the top international country markets, all have rebounded and surpassed aircraft movement
rates from 2019, except for Germany and Turkey, which still lag their 2019 levels by 3.0% and 9.6%,
respectively. The United States of America seems to be a fast-growing market, experiencing a 56.6%
increase since 2019.
Aegean/Olympic and Sky Express led and dominated the market with 46.4% and 20%, respectively, in
terms of airline aircraft movements. They are followed by Ryanair, which holds 3.9% of the market.
The busiest day of the year in terms of number of lights was Thursday, July 6th, for 2023, recording 946
lights, marking a 4% increase compared to the peak day of 2019. The peak day for international lights
was July 23rd, with 531 lights, while for domestic lights, it was July 3rd, with 447 lights.
