Relecting on 2023, Athens International Airport (AIA) witnessed a remarkable surge in traic, reaching 28.17
million passengers, surpassing both the igures from 2022 by 24% and those from 2019 by 10.2%. The Airport
experienced a notable increase in domestic passengers by 19.0% compared to 2022 and 13.3% compared to 2019.
International passengers also showed substantial growth, with a rise of 26.4% from 2022 and 8.7% from 2019.
The positive trajectory noted in the Greek Economy, which is recovering from yearlong crises, is also relected in the
passenger traic at Athens Αirport in 2023. In the irst quarter, passenger traic had already surpassed 2019 levels
by 2.4%, with both domestic and international segments exceeding the 2019 record levels. Subsequent quarters
also witnessed growth in passenger traic, with the second and third quarters witnessing growth at the level of
10% compared to 2019, while in the fourth quarter, the strong passenger demand momentum further accelerated,
resulting in a 16% increase compared to 2019.
Examining major international scheduled markets, Germany maintained its lead position with a 9.8% overall market
share in 2023, although lower than both its 2019 and 2022 shares of 10.8% and 10.6%, respectively. The United
Kingdom, Italy, and Cyprus demonstrated relatively stable market shares despite luctuations in other countries.
Spain stood out as a rapidly growing country, witnessing a 20% increase in passenger traic compared to 2019.
Among non-European scheduled cities, New York and Tel Aviv continued to dominate the market, with Tel Aviv
experiencing consistent growth, boasting an impressive 51% increase from 2019. Cairo, Toronto and Montreal also
showed signiicant growth of more than 20% from 2019, while Atlanta, with direct services to/from Athens since
2021, entered the top 10. Domestically, all the top 10 destinations surpassed 2019 volumes. Notably, Heraklion,
Chania and Paros, signiicant tourist destinations, experienced sharp traic growth since 2019.
Regarding airline performance, Aegean Airlines/Olympic Air, Sky Express and Ryanair consistently held the top three
airline positions in terms of market share. Delta Air Lines notably surged, nearly doubling its passenger numbers
since 2019 and secured a place in the top 10 airlines lying to AIA. This was largely due to increased light services,
adding two extra destinations since 2019, namely Boston and Atlanta. Load factors throughout 2023 showed an
improvement compared to 2022, rising from 76.5% to 80.1% and neared 2019's load factor of 80.9%.
The peak day of the year occurred on Sunday, July 30th, with a throughput of 112,622 passengers, marking the
highest recorded igure since the Airport’s opening in 2001. Peak day passenger throughput was 7% above the
respective peak day of 2019.
