efforts to promote the connectivity of Athens, is taking one step
68 further regarding culture and civilisation. It is becoming a cultural
portal for Athens, an alternative cultural hub. As a result of the
collaboration with two important museums, the Museum of
Cycladic Art and the Benaki Museum, AIA showcases different
aspects of Greek history and culture to passengers and visitors.
The special exhibition “Under the spell of Greek costume:
Contemporary creations animate the Benaki Museum collections”
is taking place in collaboration with the Benaki Museum and
Costa Navarino. Curated by the scenographer and costumier
Paul Thanopoulos, it is an artistic portrayal of the dialogue
between contemporary fashion and tradition, bringing together
15 internationally-acclaimed fashion designers and talented
artists, who love Greece. They draw inspiration from the collection
of printed sources of Greek costumes from the 16th to 20th
centuries, donated to the Benaki Museum by I. D. Koilalous,
as a source of inspiration for this project. At AIA, in the “Art
& Environment” exhibition area in the Departures level, this
exhibition includes a presentation of the costume “Connecting
the Memories” by the fashion creator Dimitris Dassios and the
video “Costumes” by the artist Margarita Myrogianni. Τhe artworks
are accompanied by images of great fashion designers such
as Jean-Paul Gaultier, Zeus+Δione, Mary Katrantzou, Sophia
Kokosalaki, as well as exhibits from the MENTIS Centre for the
Preservation of Traditional Textile Techniques of the Benaki
Museum and the Lyceum of Greek Women of Kalamata. The
authentic works are presented in the parallel exhibition at the
Costa Navarino.
Taking another journey, this time into the distant past, we
arrive at the Aegean, in the early Bronze Age. It is a time
when the archipelago is slowly becoming a cradle of
civilization, as indicated by the exceptional exhibition that
was recently presented at the Museum of Cycladic Art entitled
“Cycladic Society, 5,000 years ago” on the occasion of its
30th anniversary. AIA’s passengers and visitors will enjoy a
concise presentation of this large exhibition through a variety
of photographs, but mostly through a 4-minute film-poem
by Professor Nikos Stambolidis, Director of the Museum of
Cycladic Art, with music composed by Marilena Orfanos and
produced by the Museum of Cycladic Art and Haos Film (Maria
Hatzakou, Athina Rachel Tsangari). Since there are no written
sources of the Early Cycladic society (3,200-2,000 BC) in a
simple and straightforward manner through their creations,
such as the people, their activities, living environment, and the
convictions and beliefs of the Cycladic islanders. Besides, in
recent years archaeologists are attempting to reconstruct the
winder framework of life in antiquity beyond emblematic art
or architecture. And in this way, through this exhibition, AIA’s
passengers and visitors will have an initial impression of what
life was like in the Cyclades in 3000 B.C. before they visit the
islands of the Aegean.
Both exhibitions will be on display until the end of the year.
