New Acropolis Museum

A vital dialogue with the Acropolis begins with a
contemporary representation of the procession
leading up to ancient temple. Instead of a sim-
ple home for the plethora of ancient artifacts,
Swiss-German architect Bernard Tschumi, with
the aesthetic approach of his collaborator Micha-
lis Fotiadis, created a pulsating organism that
is directly connected to its natural environment
and the source of its treasures. The minimalist
glass and concrete museum features the mental
simulation of walking up the hill is accentuated
by the intense light that filters through the large
glass windows, illuminating the once multi-col-
oured statues and Caryatids, while the experi-
ence reaches its climax on the top floor, where
the incomplete Parthenon frieze keeps the hope
of the return of the marbles still alive and strong.
Αντί για ένα απλά εντυπωσιακό περίβλημα των
αρχαϊκών εκθεμάτων, η αρχιτεκτονική έμπνευ-
ση του Γαλλοελβετού Bernard Tschumi και η αι-
σθητική προσέγγιση του συνεργάτη του Μιχάλη
Φωτιάδη έπλασαν ένα ζωντανό μνημειακό οργα-
νισμό άρρηκτα συνδεδεμένο με το φυσικό του
περιβάλλον και την πηγή των θησαυρών του. Το
μινιμαλιστικό μουσείο από γυαλί και σκυρόδεμα
αποτελεί μια νοητική προσομοίωση της αρχαί-
ας ανάβασης, με τα γυάλινα παράθυρα να επι-
τρέπουν απλόχερα στο αττικό φως να λούζει ένα
δάσος από άλλοτε χρωματιστά αγάλματα και να
αγκαλιάζει τις πέντε Καρυάτιδες, ενώ στην κο-
ρύφωση ψηλαφίζει την ελλιπή ζωφόρο, ελπίζο-
ντας στην επιστροφή των υπόλοιπων γλυπτών της.
