With 2023 reaching and surpassing the 2019 pre-Covid levels, it comes as no surprise that some aspects
of the demographic and travelling proile of our passengers are similar to those of 2019. But, at the same
time some diferences can be observed, which show that despite the full recovery, air travel has changed
since 2019.
Regarding gender, an almost equal split can be observed. Male passengers account for 51% of the
total traic, compared to 49% in 2019 and 56% in 2022. The age groups 18-24 and 55+ show increased
presence in 2023, representing 7% and 17% respectively, continuing the trend that was shaped during
2022 (6% and 14% in 2022, 4% and 14% in 2019), while the 35-44 group continues to be on top, with 30%,
compared to 32% in 2022 and 2019. Foreign residents accounted for 64% of total traic, the same as in
2022 and 2019. Most of them are from E.U. (27%) and USA/Canada (15%), with the latter being the segment
with the highest increase compared to 2019 (9%). Greek residents represent 36% of total passengers,
acquiring the same share as in 2019, with the same pattern being also evident for Greek nationals (40%,
the same as in 2019).
The frequency of travelling from Athens International Airport was 2.9 trips per year in 2023, slightly above
2019 (2.6 trips). The average length of trip for foreign residents is 10 days, which is higher than in 2019
(9 days), but lower than in 2022 (11 days). Of these days, 3 are spent in Athens, which is the same as in
2022, but less than in 2019 (4 days). Greeks also spent 9 days on average at their destination, the same as
in 2019. The frequency of air travel to/from Athens has slightly increased compared to 2019, from 2.6 to
2.9 times, mainly as an increase of the share of heavy travellers (from 4% in 2019 to 7% in 2023), a trend
similar to the general air travelling trend.
During 2023, business travelling rebounded to return to 2019 levels (15%). Among the business travellers,
87% travelled for business meetings, much higher than 2019 (73%), while the biggest decrease was
observed in the Conference/Congress participants (6% instead of 11%). At the same time, “Holidays and
Tourism” remained the main reason for travelling, with 70% (75% in 2019), followed by “Visiting Friends and
Relatives” (VFR) that remained stable, with a 24% market share (26% in 2022 and 21% 2019).
The airlines’ websites were still the most popular booking mean (68%), but with a descending pattern (73%
in 2019 and 71% in 2022). A noticeable increase was witnessed in travel agent booking (from 17% in 2019
to 21% in 2023). The reservation period is 53 days, much longer than 2022 (41 days), but shorter than 2019
(60 days). The same pattern can be observed for both Greeks and foreigners, who booked their tickets 37
days (30 days in 2022 and 40 days in 2019) and 62 days (47 days in 2022 and 72 days in 2019) in advance,
respectively.
Although transfer passengers represented 18% of total traic, similarly to 2019, some interesting
variations in their movement occurred in 2023. Transferring between a domestic and an international
destination decreased since 2019 (75% compared to 86%), with the lost portion being almost equally
distributed to International to International (17% instead of 11%) and Domestic to Domestic (8% instead
of 3%) movements. The top domestic destinations for transfer passengers were Santorini (22%),
Thessaloniki and Heraklion, with 10% each. The top international destinations for transfer passengers
were the USA (13%) followed by Germany and the United Kingdom (England), with each of them
representing 10% of connecting passengers.
