international passengers, at 8,24 million, illustrated only small overall losses at the level of 2,40%. This
result was formulated by the overall reduced travelling demand by the Greek residents (-9,10%), vis-a-
vis the upward trend of the foreign residents (+2,70%). The traffic evolution during the last months of the
year indicates a clear recovery trend which started in May and continued throughout the second half of
2013, with passenger traffic returning to growth from October onwards. Looking into more detail in the
international sector and the traffic development of the various regions, the Middle East was the region
that once more achieved robust passenger traffic development, with a growth at the level of 7%, while
Eastern Europe also proved resilient to the adverse market conditions and achieved a small but import-
ant 2,40% increase. Western Europe, which represents approximately 78% of AIA’s international traffic,
witnessed a small traffic loss of -2% and largely formulated the overall result. Overall, in 2013, Athens
was directly connected with scheduled services with 101 destinations (68 international) in 41 countries,
operated by a total of 55 carriers.

2. Business Highlights
The Airport Company’s business highlights for the year 2013 are presented hereunder:
Airport Operations
For another year, the Airport Company maintained safe, orderly and efficient aviation operations,
throughout the year, offering high-quality services to aircraft operators, ground-handlers and passen-
gers. The close cooperation with all stakeholders ensured the expected safety level and passenger
convenience.
Safety records demonstrated an enhanced performance, while an important revision of AIA’s major
document, the Aerodrome Operations Manual (AOM), took place during the second half of 2013. The
annual full-scale winter operations exercise, carried out in December, demonstrated the operational
readiness and capability of the airport to deal with winter operations.

Aiming at further improving the overall safety performance and staff awareness, we organized a series
of trainings and safety activities, including airside safety awareness presentations, meetings with
stakeholders, and safety campaigns at the airside. AIA’s compliance with international standards and
best practices was further certified via the conduct of a series of internal audits to several departments.
In the context of the Crisis Planning & Emergency Management, during 2013, AIA pursued its objec-
tives, through a series of specialized trainings and workshops, along with the participation / conduct of
10 exercises, including the Partial Emergency Exercise “Aircraft Accident on the Airport”, in compliance
with ICAO regulations.

In the ground handling sector, the year’s noteworthy activity was highlighted by our initiatives in the field
of the facilitation and handling of persons with disability and/or reduced mobility, and by the signing of
a Memorandum with the International Paralympic Committee and the successful handling of delegates
in the frame of its International Conference and General Assembly of the International Paralympic
Committee hosted in Athens. Also, a distinction was achieved by the Athens Airport aviation fuel supply
chain, further to all parts receiving for the first time in the same year Certificates of Excellence, following
the recent inspections by the Joint Inspection Group (JIG).
The Airport Security System and the level of security services in access control, passenger and hand
baggage screening, hold baggage screening and entrance permits issuance were successfully audited
by the EU relevant security inspectors twice during 2013. Furthermore, HCAA performed system tests
on passenger and hand baggage screening operations, with positive results.

Significant space optimization and operational synergies were achieved at the main screening point in
Intra Schengen area with the completion of a new, modern and very functional checkpoint. In the Extra
Schengen area, passport control checkpoints have been upgraded featuring extra security coverage
via the use of beam detectors and special cameras, in compliance with EU Schengen Committee
Directives to ensure passenger data confidentiality and national border protection.
