In a mountainous region of Ethiopia 11
medieval orthodox churches were carved
out of rock. Their building is attributed to
King Lalibela who set out to construct in
the 12th century a ‘New Jerusalem’, after
Muslim conquests of the Holy Land. Of
Lalibela's 8-10,000 people, over 1,000 are
priests. Religious ritual is central to the life
of the town. This, combined with its religious
architecture gives the city of Lalibela an
almost biblical atmosphere. | Σε μια ορεινή
περιοχή της Αιθιοπίας βρίσκονται 11 υπόγειες
ορθόδοξες εκκλησίες λαξευμένες σε βράχους.
Η κατασκευή τους αποδίδεται στο βασιλιά
Λαλιμπέλα, που μετά τη μουσουλμανική
κατάκτηση των Αγίων Τόπων θέλησε να
δημιουργήσει μια Νέα Ιερουσαλήμ. Από τους
8-10.000 κατοίκους, οι 1.000 είναι ιερείς. Αυτό
σε συνδυασμό με τη θρησκευτική αρχιτεκτονική
προσδίδουν μια βιβλική εικόνα στην πόλη.
