Lake Antogo, Mali | Μάλι
You’d be hard-pressed to recognise this scene
for what it is: an annual ‘festival of fish’ that can
occur only once during the year, as tradition
dictates. On this special day – usually in May –
during the six-month-long winter drought, the
Dogon tribe of southern Mali live out a particular
time-honoured ritual: men are allowed to fish in
the sacred Lake Antogo. The ‘lake’ in question
is in reality more of a large pond and when it’s
being surrounded by several hundred fishermen
waiting to pounce, it looks even smaller, set as it
is amid a barren desert landscape. On a signal
- a gunshot - the Dogon men storm into the
water. Fish are caught with bare hands and
rough-weave baskets; many hold on to their
catch with their teeth. In his maelstrom of arms,
legs and bodies, the fish don’t have a chance.
After just half an hour, a second gunshot brings
proceedings to a close. The catch is gathered
and divided by the village elders.
Δύσκολα θα μαντέψεις τι είναι αυτό: πρόκειται
για ένα φεστιβάλ ψαριών, που παραδοσιακά
διοργανώνεται μόνο μία μέρα κάθε χρόνο
(συνήθως Μάιο). Εκείνη την ξεχωριστή μέρα της
εξάμηνης χειμερινής ξηρασίας, η φυλή Ντογκόν
στο νότιο Μάλι αναβιώνει ένα παλιό έθιμο που
επιτρέπει στους άνδρες να ψαρέψουν στην
ιερή λίμνη Αντόγκο. Η εν λόγω «λίμνη» είναι
μάλλον ένας μεγάλος νερόλακκος στη μέση
της ερήμου που, ειδικά όταν την κατακλύζουν
εκατοντάδες ψαράδες, μοιάζει ακόμη μικρότερη.
Ένας πυροβολισμός δίνει το σύνθημα για να
ορμήσουν οι άντρες της φυλής Ντογκόν στο
νερό. Πιάνουν τα ψάρια με γυμνά χέρια και με
χοντροπλεγμένα καλάθια. Αρκετοί κρατούν τη
λεία τους με τα δόντια. Σε αυτόν τον κυκεώνα
χεριών, ποδιών και σωμάτων, τα ψάρια δεν έχουν
ελπίδα. Μισή ώρα αργότερα, ένας δεύτερος
πυροβολισμός σημαίνει το τέλος του αγώνα. Η
ψαριά συγκεντρώνεται και μοιράζεται από τους
γηραιούς του χωριού.
