Athens International Airport’s route network New Airlines

in 2008 comprised 115 destinations in 51 Adria Airways
countries. A total of 67 carriers, operating Baboo
direct scheduled services, connected Athens
with these 33 domestic and 82 international New Destinations
destinations. Although the economic
slowdown had a significant impact in the Ljubljana
airline industry, AIA’s extensive incentive Nice
schemes paid out, with 2 new carriers, Adria London Stansted
Airways and Baboo, launching scheduled Oslo Rygge
operations to/from Athens, and 4 new airports
(Ljubljana, Nice, London Stansted, Oslo Rygge)
added to the airport’s route network.
Adria Airways made the beauties of Slovenia
more easily accessible to Athens travellers,
by launching 3 weekly flights to Ljublljana
in April, while Baboo brought Athens closer
to the French popular destination of Nice,
through its 5-weekly direct services introduced
in November. Norwegian launched a seasonal
2-weekly service to Oslo Rygge, enhancing
the connection of Athens with Scandinavia,
while Aegean Airlines started a 2-daily flight
to London Stansted in May, completing the
link between Athens and the British capital
through all 4 London airports.
With new aircraft in place, Aegean Airlines
further expanded its international network in
the course of 2008, introducing new services
to Tirana and Paris, and upgrading its one-stop
flights to Düsseldorf, offering since October a
direct service to this German city with a large
Greek community (more than 10,000). Finally,
Air One launched a 2-daily service to Milan in
June, enhancing its services between Athens
and Italy, which also included Rome, Bologna
and Naples.
As per cargo services, a total of 10 airlines
offered scheduled cargo flights via Athens
International Airport during 2007. The entry of
Airgo Airlines, a new Greek cargo airline that
launched operations in September, is the most
important development in the Athens air cargo
market within 2008. Also worth mentioning
is the cease of operations of Alitalia cargo in
March 2008, and the renaming of Vernicos
Aviation to Epsilon Aviation.
