Passenger Traffic
Passenger traffic enjoyed healthy growth throughout the
year, both in the domestic and the international markets.
The month with the highest traffic increase compared
to 006 was March, at 1.1%. This was driven by the
remarkable growth demonstrated in the domestic market
for that month (+14.4%). On the other hand, international
passengers achieved highest growth during May (+14.9%),
driven by the increased wave of incoming traffic for the
Champions League Final that took place in Athens on 4
May (see Chart 4.4).

With respect to the main European scheduled destinations
out of Athens for the year 007, London, Larnaca and Paris
are steadily in the first positions. Frankfurt climbed up two
notches, gaining 4th place, overtaking Milan and Rome,
both of which showed a rather stagnant development.
Zurich and Madrid, with growth levels of % and 14%
respectively, also moved up one notch in the destinations
ranking (see Chart 4.7).

The rapid growth of the international sector was driven by
high-level increases in all international regions. Western
Europe, the airport’s largest market, enjoyed an 8% increase,
while all other international markets achieved double-digit
increases. Eastern Europe was the fastest growing region
with a .% traffic rise, reaching 1 million passengers,
North America followed closely with a growth rate of
.1%, while the Middle East won third place with an
increase of 15.1%. In 007, these three markets managed
to gain share in international traffic at the expense of
Western Europe (see Charts 4.5, 4.6).

Regarding traffic evolution outside Europe, the majority of
the top destinations presented a positive development, with
Doha and Dubai achieving the highest levels of increase
(+44% and +4% respectively). Doha climbed into 6th place,
while Bangkok, Singapore and Atlanta improved their
positions in non-European ranking as well (see Chart 4.8).
