Three weekly flights will connect both cities - Spain’s clickair inaugurates its Barcelona-Athens connection

Athens/Barcelona (October 29).- Spain’s clickair, recently named the world’s best new low-cost airline, brought its unique philosophy to Athens International Airport where its first revenue flight from Barcelona landed at 10.40 h. today.

The first Airbus A-320 clickair flight out of Barcelona’s El Prat International Airport departed this morning at 06.35 and touched down on schedule Athens Eleftherios Venizelos after a three hour flight with 94 passengers on board. The return trip to Spain’s second largest city departed Athens at 12.35 with 69 passengers.

Until March 2008, the service will be operated on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Lead in fares start from as little as 40 € one way and are available directly on clickair’s website (www.clickair.com) or through any Travel Agent as clickair is carried on the main Global Distribution Systems such as Amadeus and Sabre thanks to a code-share.

clickair is a new model low cost carrier – a third generation airline – which offers low fares but also the flexibility to change departures without hefty penalties, all-in-one on line seating selection and boarding pass printing when purchasing –a world first called “click&fly”— and a number of other features not found on conventional low cost carriers such as preferential seating, Iberia Plus frequent flier miles, access to business lounges, etc.

In little more than a year since its launch on October 1 2006, clickair has become Europe’s fastest growing airline. Starting out with three aircraft and 24 daily flights to five destinations, it now operates more than 120 flights per day to 50 destinations in Spain, the British Isles, Continental Europe and Northern Africa. Its current fleet strength is of 22 180-seat Airbus A-320-200 jets, which will increase to 30 aircraft by mid 2008.

The speed and depth of clickair’s route expansion, plus its innovative approach combining low fares with services and features up to now found only in traditional carriers, earned it the award as “Best Newcomer” at the World Low Cost Airline Congress held last September in London.

clickair is owned by five major Spanish companies, each with a 20% share of the equity:  Iberia airlines; Nefinsa (parent of successful Spanish regional airline, Air Nostrum); Spanish construction group Cobra; hotel and resort company Iberostar, and Quercus Equity, a private equity fund, part of the Agrolimen Group. clickair has its headquarters at Barcelona El Prat Airport.
