Environmental protection has always been a priority, not only for AIA, but also for the numerous companies operating at the airport. AIA’s commitment for protecting the environment and preventing or lessening impacts, where possible, is reflected in the Corporate Environmental Policy and procedures.
Environmental conditions are closely monitored at the airport and its vicinity. Initiatives based on international best practice for improving environmental performance are implemented in collaboration with our business partners and other stakeholders. Sharing of information is encouraged across the airport community and towards governmental authorities and the general public. Furthermore, we are continuously engaged in raising environmental awareness within our company, the airport community and local communities.
AIA participates in a global industry initiative led by Airports Council International (ACI) Europe aimed at managing greenhouse gas emissions under the control of airport operators. In 2023, ΑΙΑ met all the necessary requirements to upgrade to the final, most ambitious level of the Airport Carbon Accreditation Programme: Level 4+ Transition. This was accomplished by further strengthening cooperation with Third Parties in the Airport community and their commitment toward emission reductions, as well as by calculating additional Scope 3 emissions from indirect sources. Since 2005, AIA has managed to reduce its carbon footprint by 60% and since 2015 it has been offsetting its residual emissions to achieve carbon neutral status, the only such airport in Greece.
In order to effectively manage environmental challenges and to incorporate sustainability principles in our processes, our Environmental Management System (EMS) is certified according to the international standard ISO:14001 since 2000. Strict compliance with all applicable national and European legislation and the continuous improvement of AIA’s environmental performance constitute major elements of the EMS. In addition, AIA requires all major third parties operating at the airport to certify their EMS in accordance with ISO:14001 and/or Eco-Management and Audit Schedule (EMAS) regulations.
