Sculpture exhibition for the first time at Athens International Airport "Honourary Event on the work of Sculptor George Zongolopoulos" (June 6th 2008 – January 31st 2008)

From June 6th, 2008 through January 31st, 2009, sculptures and photographic material of George Zongolopoulos’ work will be adorning interior and exterior spaces of Athens International Airport, in an

"Honourary Event on the work of Sculptor George Zongolopoulos"

presented by Athens International Airport with the contribution of the George Zongolopoulos Foundation, as a tribute to the great Greek sculptor (1903 – 2004).

Five of the sculptor’s creations on Departures Level and a photographic flashback displayed on Arrivals Level of the Main Terminal Building, will give the opportunity to all airport visitors for the next 6 months to get acquainted with the work of the great artist who left his imprint on his country as well as on European art.

Close to the Departures Level entrances, two bronze cast and stainless sculptures («Cor-Ten» and «Olympic Circles») will be welcoming passengers, while the stainless artwork “Poseidon” and a small-scale bronze cast of the gigantic “Zalongo” monument will be on display inside the Main Terminal Building. Airport passengers and visitors will also be able to admire one of the most notable works of Zongolopoulos, the “Zalongo”, located at a central point within the Main Terminal Building.

The airport, which has hosted many cultural and art exhibitions since its opening in 2001, has the honour of welcoming in it’s premises five more artworks of the prominent Greek artist, whose gigantic work “Olympic Circles” (18 metres long, 15 metres high, and weighing 9 tonnes) embellishes the airport’s open-air site since 2002, with the circles symbolizing bright routes and bonds among people and nations.

All sculptures are on display at public interior and exterior areas of the Main Terminal Building, accessible to all airport visitors.

The photographic exhibition will be open on a 24 hour basis, at Arrivals level (Entrance 1). The area is accessible for all airport visitors.

Art connoisseur Efi Andreade was responsible for the selection of the artworks, and Professor NTUA Sonia Charalambidou-Divani for the architectural design.
