Safe and efficient handling of 7.8 million departing baggage in the first 16 months of operation

With the completion of 16 months of Athens International Airport operation, approximately 7,850,000 departing bags have been 100% screened and successfully transported through AIA's sophisticated Baggage Handling System and screening machines.

Specifically, up to the end of July 2002, the following number of departing bags has been screened, transported and handled:

  • 6,900,000 "in-gate" bags were 100% screened and passed through the BHS.
  • 950,000 "out-of-gauge" bags were 100% screened using the transfer and transit "OOG" baggage screening machines.

BHS Record Days

Saturday 18 August 2001, was the peak day for bags passing through the BHS: Approximately 32,000 bags passed through the baggage halls, which is a record number for baggage handling.

Respectively, on Sunday 29 July 2001, a record number of 3,780 bags were transported by AIA Baggage Manual Handlers via the "OOG" lifts, and 100% screened. Usually, baggage handlers transport approximately 2,000 bags daily.

Finally, the entire BHS Operating Team deserves a special mention for their timely and efficient baggage handling. For them, "luggage is the top priority", and they prove it in action.
