Programme for the preservation and protection of the Vravrona wetland

Athens International Airport and the Hellenic Ornithological Society are very pleased to announce the launch of a programme for the preservation and protection of the Vravrona wetland. The programme, with a 1st phase of a 40,000 euros budget, is funded by Athens International Airport and conducted by the Hellenic Ornithological Society with the significant contribution of the Municipality of Markopoulo. The initiative includes the clean-up of the area, the placement of signage, the improvement of walking paths and the creation of education material and programmes. The programme will be launched with a voluntary the clean-up of the area on Sunday, December 7th.

The Vravrona wetland is included in the Natura 2000 network and uniquely combines a wealth of wildlife, with rare flora and fauna, and an important archaeological site, the Artemis sanctuary. It is worth mentioning that some 175 bird species have been recorded in the greater Vravrona area, along with other rare animals and flowers.

However, despite its significant environmental and historical value, the area requires preservation due to waste, illegal hunting, access of vehicles issues, etc. This collaboration between Athens International Airport S.A. and the Hellenic Ornithological Society, aims to preserve this unique environment, which combines a wetland and an archaeological site of rare beauty and importance.
