Preservation and protection of the Vravrona Wetland

Creation of special track for visitors with reduced eyesight

As part of the programme for the preservation and protection of the Vravrona Wetland, the Hellenic Ornithological Society and the Athens International Airport created a special path, offering visitors with reduced eyesight the experience of the wetland environment, an area combining great environmental and archaeological value. The track will be inaugurated tomorrow, Wednesday, April 6th, visit starting at the Archaeological Museum of Vravrona.

The path - the first of its kind created in Greece – starts at the Vravrona Museum, continues east of the archaeological site, and ends a short way from the Erasinos river. Of a total length of 500 metres, the track is equipped with a special guiding system, offering a unique experience to people with reduced eyesight. Special relief signs guide visitors through the wetland environment, organized in categories, such as “the wetland”, “wet meadows”, “shrubs”. Orientation and acoustic systems enabling visitors to listen to the sounds of the birds of the wetland, are also provided.

The creation of the visit-path was made possible thanks to the efforts of the Hellenic Ornithological Society and the Athens International Airport, in cooperation with the Panhellenic Association of the Blind and the Lighthouse for the Blind of Greece, within the framework of the programme for the Vravrona Wetland protection. The Vravrona Wetland path invites everyone for a visit, nature-lovers and especially parents; children will find this an excellent experience!

As of 2008, the Hellenic Ornithological Society and the Athens International Airport jointly run a programme for the preservation and protection of the Vravrona wetland, in cooperation with the Municipality of Markopoulo. The initiative, aiming to preserve this unique environment which combines a wetland and an archaeological site of rare beauty and importance, includes the clean-up of the area, the placement of signage, the improvement of walking paths and the creation of education material and programmes.
