Piraeus Container Terminal Athens International Airport - The 'Sea-Air' link Agreement

Athens International Airport (AIA) and Piraeus Container Terminal S.A. (PCT S.A.) today presented the agreement for the “sea-air” link between the port of Piraeus and the airport, with the objective of further developing cargo flows.

The agreement between AIA and PCT, which was recently signed within the framework of the conclusion of commercial agreements between Greece and China in the presence of the Prime Ministers of both countries, concerns the creation of a “bridge” between the port of Piraeus and Athens International Airport through a direct truck-shuttle service, at favourable cost and handling terms. Through the specific transit points of the airport and the Piraeus Container Terminal, AIA aims to attract additional transit cargo through Athens by implementing speedier and simplified procedures and establish a new product that is internationally competitive.

At a time when the local air freight sector has been affected by the harsh economic conditions, this “sea-air” agreement is expected to utilize the new infrastructure of the region and create more opportunities for synergies and development for the cargo industry.

“The further development of the multi-modal “sea-air” link is part of AIA’s philosophy”, stated Alexis Sioris, AIA Cargo Development Manager. “Especially in this difficult period for our sector,  our ‘seanairgy’ with PCT, an important ‘player’ with strong dynamics and know-how, aims to give new momentum in the transit business via the airport, by providing alternative services to our clients with substantial benefit for the airport cargo community.”

On behalf of PCT, Anastasios Vamvakidis, Deputy Commercial Manager, stated: “The dynamics and prestige provided by our holding company COSCO Pacific Limited, give us the drive to develop beyond the strict boundaries of a container terminal. Our vision for a modern state-of-the-art container terminal passes through the collaboration and investment in new ideas and proposals, such as this multi modal seanairgy for combined sea-air flows. PCT will exploit AIA’s know-how and experience to establish seanairgy in the transport community.
