In cooperation with the Museum of Cycladic Art, Athens International Airport hosts from October 12th, 2011 through January 6th, 2012, a photographic exhibition of the Museum’s Permanent Cycladic Art Collection. Visitors will have the opportunity to have an overview of the Cycladic culture, one of the oldest in Europe with organized communities, through photographic material and texts.
By visiting this photographic presentation, visitors will learn more about Cycladic figurines, as well as about the clay, stone, and metal vases and objects dating back to the specific era. The collection of the Museum of Cycladic Art, one of the most significant collections of its kind worldwide, comprises more than 400 objects made of clay, stone, marble and metal, dating back to all the periods of the Early Cycladic culture (3200-2000 b.C.). The transparent marble of the islands, the austere simplicity and abstract quality of the figurines, have influenced great artists of the 20th century, such as Brancusi, Matisse, Modigliani, and Barbara Hepworth.
The photographic presentation of the Cycladic Art Collection of the Museum of Cycladic Art constitutes the third phase of this year’s cooperation of Athens International airport with the Museum. The previous presentations of exhibitions displayed at the airport, were titled “Scenes from Daily Life in Antiquity”, and «The Last Grand Tour”. The Cycladic Art exhibition is located at the “Art & Culture” exhibition area on Arrivals Level / Entrance 1. There is a free access to the exhibition for all airport visitors on a 24-hour basis.
