The operation at Athens International Airport of the specialized equipment for use in unfavourable weather conditions took place today with success, thus securing the smooth running of "Eleftherios Venizelos" airport.
More specifically, due to the heavy snowfall that was recorded from early morning, the specialized systems for "blind landing" (ILS CAT II) designed for the operation of flights in conditions of low visibility were activated and they worked seamlessly.
At the same time, all the specified procedures for the secure and smooth movement of ground handling vehicles in the aircraft parking area were strictly adhered to.
The staff trained for using the special vehicles were also in full readiness and they directed the state-of-the-art snow removal machines, the runway de-icing liquid sprayers (with a capacity of 10,000 litres each) as well as the specialized salt-dispersal vehicles of the Athens International Airport, ensuring the efficient operation of the two runways for take off and landing, as well as the full accessibility of the remaining areas of the airport.
Under today's weather conditions, which were encountered for the first time, Athens International Airport proved its operational readiness, taking advantage of its excellent infrastructure to the full.
