June 5th, 2010: Athens International Airport - World Environment Day

June 5th is celebrated worldwide as “Environment Day”. Our company is once again actively participating in this year's celebration with the following initiatives:

Voluntary tree planting at the Artemis coastal park
On Friday, June 4th, volunteer employees from Athens International Airport S.A. and other companies operating at the airport, will participate in a voluntary tree planting at the coastal park of the neighbouring Municipality of Artemis. This action is part of the airport’s green project initiative for Artemis that was launched in 2006 with the construction of the 26,000 m² park along the coast.

Painting exhibition for the pupils of the 4th Primary School of Artemis
On June 4th, school pupils will present their paintings under the title “Seals in Greece” and learn from AIA and MOm representatives about seal adoption programmes in Greece. Aiming to reward the children’s participation, AIA will cover the cost for the adoption of a seal from MOm for one year on behalf of the school.

Recycling Programme at the schools of Artemis
Once again, the airport is rewarding the schools of Artemis for their enthusiastic participation in the airport’s recycling programmes. Athens International Airport will offer educational material, cover infrastructure works, and organise environmental activities. In 2009, the children collected 3 tonnes of paper and aluminium, while, since 2005, total recycled material exceeds 30 tonnes.

Two-day recycling for AIA employees
Further strengthening AIA’s recycling programmes, on Thursday, June 3rd and Friday, June 4th, the airport is organising a recycling competition for airport employees, aiming to collect even more recyclables.

Scholarships for the University of the Aegean
For the 8th consecutive year, Athens International Airport is offering scholarships to 2 post-graduate students of the University of the Aegean (Department of Environmental Studies) on the subject of environmental management.

Our updated bilingual publication “Care for the Environment”, which describes in detail AIA’s environmental activities will be available shortly on our corporate Internet site: (http://www.aia.gr/ebooks/enc/carefortheenvironment/issue12/index.html)
