June 5th, 2009: Athens International Airport – World Environment Day

June 5th is celebrated worldwide as “Environment Day”. Our company is once again actively participating in this year's celebration with the following initiatives:

On Friday (June 5th) we organise the voluntary clean-up of the Vravrona Wetlands* by AIA and other airport employees. This action is part of the airport’s programme for the protection and upgrade of the Vravrona wetlands, in cooperation with the Hellenic Ornithological Society, which includes clean-up of the area, creation of paths, placement of signs and development of educational material.  Following the area clean-up, members of ANIMA association (Protection and Welfare of Wildlife) will release a buzzard, an owl, and 3 young hedgehogs, which recuperated from injuries in ANIMA's care, back to their natural environment!

Recycling Programme at the schools of Artemis, which in 2008 collected 4 tons of paper and aluminium, and provision of rewards including educational material, infrastructure works and other environmental activities.

Scholarships to 2 post-graduate students at the University of the Aegean (Department of Environmental Studies) for the 7th consecutive year on the subject of environmental management.

Our updated bilingual publication “Care for the Environment,” which describes in detail AIA’s environmental activities is available on our corporate intranet site

* The Vravrona wetland is included in the Natura 2000 network and uniquely combines a wealth of wildlife, with rare flora and fauna, and an important archaeological site, the Artemis sanctuary. It is worth mentioning that some 175 bird species have been recorded in the greater Vravrona area, along with other rare animals and flowers. However, despite its significant environmental and historical value, the area requires preservation due to waste, illegal hunting, access of vehicles issues, etc. This collaboration between Athens International Airport S.A. and the Hellenic Ornithological Society, aims to preserve this unique environment, which combines a wetland and an archaeological site of rare beauty and importance.
