Airport and the Environment • Recycling rate increased to 55% • Scholarships for postgraduate students • 2,300 pupils visited the Vravrona Wetland • Recycling competition for airport employees Athens International Airport continues to actively join the celebration of World Environment Day with a range of environmental protection actions, and initiatives that aim to improve the airport’s environmental performance and minimise the impact from its operations. • Upgrade to Level 3 (Optimisation) of Airport Carbon Accreditation, a voluntary programme launched by Airports Council International (ACI Europe) to help airports address their contribution to climate change. In addition, in honour of its innovative environmental programmes and initiatives, Athens International Airport received ACI’s coveted Eco-Innovation Award in 2013, a significant acknowledgment of the Athens airport’s leading approach to environmental protection. • Significant increase in the recycling rate to 55% in 2013, approaching the target of 60% set for 2016. • Reward for the schools of the Spata-Artemis Municipality for the active participation of their students in AIA’s recycling programme with educational materials and environmentally themed excursions. In 2013 the students recycled 6.4 tonnes of paper, bringing the total amount of material recycled since the programme started in 2005 to nearly 50 tonnes. • For the 12th consecutive year, Scholarships for 2 postgraduate students at the University of the Aegean (Department of Environmental Studies) in order to encourage and strengthen academic research in the field of environmental protection.
• Implementation of the programme for the Upgrade and Protection of the Vravrona Wetland for the 7th consecutive year in collaboration with the Hellenic Ornithological Society. In the framework of the programme, 2,300 pupils from 52 schools visited the wetland in 2013 and became familiar with its unique ecological and cultural value. Also, in honour of World Environment Day, AIA is organising a One-day Recycling Competition for Airport employees on Thursday June 5th aiming to raise environmental awareness and encourage recycling across the airport site.
