June 5, International Day for the Environment - Athens International Airport offers scholarships to the University of the Aegean on the occasion of the International Day for the Environment

Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" is once again actively present on the occasion of the "International Day for the Environment". Aiming to encourage environmental studies, Athens International Airport offers, for the 3rd consecutive year, three environmental scholarships to graduate students of the University of the Aegean (Department of Environmental Studies), on topics related to the development of an environmental educational programme, waste management, and the creation of an environmental database.

From the diploma award ceremony
of the University of the Aegean, during
which the certifications of last year's
three scholarships
were provided to graduate students
(December 21st, 2004).

Continuously taking initiatives in the environmental field, “Eleftherios Venizelos” is one of the few airports worldwide with an Environmental Department certified according to EN ISO 14001. Going back to the past year, it is worth noting that 2004 has been very productive in terms of recycling. Through the “zero charge” incentive, AIA encourages recycling for paper, plastic, glass, aluminum, wood, and used vehicle tires. This initiative, combined with the increased airport activities, led to more than doubling the amount of recyclables in 2004 compared to 2003, from 654 to 1,504 tons.

Information about the airport's environmental goals and programmes is always available for the public at the airport’s Environmental Information Centre (Main Terminal Building, Departures Level, Entrance 3 / next to the Airport Museum). At our Environmental Information Centre, passengers and visitors of the airport will also find the new (7th) Environmental Bulletin, providing analytical details over AIA’s environmental activities. The Bulletin, issued on an annual basis, aims to inform the public, local communities, public authorities and other entities, and raise awareness over environmental issues.
