June 5 2007: AIA honours the International Day for the Environment

Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" (AIA) is once again actively present on the occasion of the "International Day for the Environment" (June 5th).

In the framework of AIA’s environment protection and preservation programme in the surrounding areas, the airport has undertaken an initiative for the preservation of the Vravrona wetland with a 40,000 Euro plan. Upon approval from the relevant authorities, AIA’s activities will include the clean-up of the area, placement of signage, construction work of walking paths, etc.

In addition, AIA will construct infrastructure works and offer educational material of a total value of 20,000 Euro to Artemis Municipality schools that have actively joined the airport’s Recycling Programme, rewarding them for recycling more than 16 tonnes of paper & aluminium to date.

Moreover, aiming to encourage environmental studies, Athens International Airport offers, for the 5th consecutive year, 2 environmental scholarships to graduate students of the University of the Aegean (Department of Environmental Studies), relating to environmental management.

  • Information about AIA’s environmental activities and initiatives is always available for the public at the airport’s Environmental Information Centre (Main Terminal Building, Departures Level, Entrance 3 / next to the Airport Museum). At our Environmental Information Centre, passengers and visitors of the airport will also find the new (9th) Environmental Bulletin, providing analytical details over AIA’s environmental activities.
  • Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” is one of the few airports worldwide with an Environmental Department certified according to EN ISO 14001.
