“People around you are now your family” Κareem, 30 years, Iran Selected photographs from the “City Streets” exhibition will be on display from February 2nd until April 30th, 2009 for the thousands of passengers and visitors passing through Athens International Airport, after last year’s successful tour of the exhibition to Athens, Thessaloniki, Brussels, and Istanbul. The exhibition is organized by Athens International Airport S.A. (AIA) and the British Council, in cooperation with the Hellenic Migration Policy Institute (IMEPO), and showcases part of the photographic material produced within the framework of the City Streets programme. Aim of this project is to encourage open cultural dialogue and strengthen social solidarity and respect for the human right to diversity. As the city of Athens is going through its transformation into a metropolis, identities are being re-defined; migrants enrich city life with a unique energy, creating new worlds which co-exist and interact with the old. Fourteen young photographers wandered around the streets of Athens for fourteen months, capturing through the photographer’s lens their own reflection of life in an incessantly changing city. At the same time,eighty-four pupils of different nationalities from ten schools across the Municipality of Attica, have recorded moments of their everyday life in the neighbourhood, at home, or at school. The acclaimed Greek photographer, Nikos Economopoulos, is the Artistic Director of the exhibition, and also led a series of workshops for the photographers who won last year’s City Streets Photography Competition. Anthropologist Nadina Christopoulou was the exhibition’s Scientific Advisor, while photographer Kamilo Nollas was responsible for the co-ordination of school photography workshops. The exhibition is open to the public on a 24hr basis, at Athens International Airport’s Arrivals Level / Entrance 1 (the area is accessible for all airport visitors). Note for Editors: Kindly note that photographers’ names should be mentioned when publishing photographic material from the exhibition.
