Athens International Airport - PARTIAL SCALE EMERGENCY EXERCISE - October 31, 2007

Athens International Airport organises emergency exercises on an annual basis, aiming at ensuring the highest level of safety, readiness, training, and coordination of all other parties involved in emergency situations.

The Partial Scale Emergency Exercise 2007 “Aircraft’s Accident on the Airport”, which took place today, Wednesday, October 31st, 2007, was organised in compliance with the obligations arising from the ICAO regulations.

The following entities took part in the exercise:
 

  • Athens International Airport S.A.
  • Olympic Airlines
  • Airport Fire Corps
  • Airport Services of Emergency Medical Care
  • Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority / ATC
  • Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority / Airport Authority (AIA)
  • Airport Hellenic Police

Please find below the scenario of AIA’s Partial Scale Emergency Exercise of October 31st, 2007:

 

EXERCISE SCENARIO

On the basis of the scenario, at approximately 10:00 o’clock local time, OA’s B-734 aircraft operating domestic flight, experiences an engine failure during take-off roll that resulted in a rejected take-off. The aircraft comes to a rest with a fire.

According to the scenario, 60 souls total are on board, 4 of them crew. The aircraft stops at taxiway D while the pilot commands emergency evacuation. Aircraft’s doors open and passengers and crew perform an emergency evacuation.
Airport’s Fire Corps vehicles approach and encircle the aircraft starting fire fighting and rescuing operation.

Based on the scenario, during the emergency evacuation the pilot, a steward and 15 passengers trapped in the plane. Casualties from the accident include 4 passengers seriously injured and 13 less-seriously injured.
