Athens International Airport: PARTIAL SCALE EMERGENCY EXERCISE

Athens International Airport organises emergency exercises on an annual basis, aiming to test its Emergency Plan and ensure the highest level of safety, readiness, training, and coordination of all parties involved in emergency situations.

The Partial Emergency Exercise 2011 “Aircraft Accident at the Airport” was conducted successfully today, Tuesday, November 15th, 2011, in the context of AIA’s regular emergency exercises, in compliance with the obligations arising from the ICAO regulations.

Besides Athens International Airport S.A., the following entities participated in the exercise:

  • Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority / Air Traffic Control Tower
  • Hellenic Civil Authority / Airport Authority (AIA)
  • Airport Fire Corps
  • Fire Corps
  • Airport Services of Emergency Medical Care
  • National Centre for Emergency Care (EKAV)
  • Airport Police
  •  Airline (Aegean Airline)
  •  Sofitel
 

EXERCISE SCENARIO

“The scenario involves an A-320 aircraft that during landing procedure experiences a main gear collapse which resulted in an accident.  The aircraft operated a passenger flight Thessaloniki – Athens with 62 souls total on board, 6 of them crew.
According to the scenario, during landing at 03L/21R runway of Athens airport, the aircraft comes to a rest on A14 link with a fire in main lading gear. 
Passengers and crew performed an emergency evacuation through aircraft slide, while black smoke and flames appeared at the right wing. 

Airport Fire Corps vehicles approach the incident venue surrounding the aircraft.  Fire extinction and rescue begin.

According to the scenario, casualties from the accident include: 2 dead, 5 seriously injured and 10 less-seriously injured.”
