Athens International Airport honours the International Day for the Environment

Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" (AIA) is once again actively present on the occasion of the "International Day for the Environment" (June 5th), with the following initiatives and environmental projects:

  • In the frame of the protection and preservation programme in the vicinity of the airport, Athens International Airport has launched an initiative for the preservation of the Vavrona wetland with an action plan which includes the clean-up of the area, placement of signage, improvement of walking paths, etc.

At the same time, we have started the planning phase for the construction of a green area of 24,000 m2 in the neighbouring Municipality of Spata. Works shall include tree and other flora planting, construction of pathways, recreation kiosks etc. This is the sixth urban green area project undertaken by Athens International Airport S.A. in the neighbouring area of Messoghia, for the environmental improvement and upgrade of the region.

  • For one more year, Athens International Airport offers educational material, school equipment and the organization of environmental activities to the schools of the Municipality of Artemis as a reward for the pupils’ keen and productive participation in the airport’s recycling programme. Thanks to their growing enthusiasm, the children have recycled since the end of 2005 over 23 tonnes of paper & aluminium.

  • Moreover, aiming to encourage environmental studies, Athens International Airport offers, for the 6th consecutive year, 2 environmental scholarships to graduate students of the University of the Aegean (Department of Environmental Studies), on topics related to environmental management.

  • Information about AIA’s environmental activities and initiatives is always available for the public at the airport’s Environmental Information Centre (Main Terminal Building, Departures Level, Entrance 3 / next to the Airport Museum). At our Environmental Information Centre, passengers and visitors of the airport will also find the new (10th) Environmental Bulletin “Care for the Environment”, providing detailed information regarding AIA’s environmental activities. This publication is also available in www.aia.gr.

  • Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” is one of the few airports worldwide with an Environmental Department certified according to EN ISO 14001.
