Committed to its major objective to effectively contribute to environmental protection and continuously monitor and control potential environmental impacts, Athens International Airport presents a new facility, the "Environmental Information Center", located in the airport's Main Terminal Building (Departures Level / Entrance 3).
The main objective of the Environmental Information Center - an area accessible to all passengers and visitors - is to inform the public about AIA's environmental activities and increase environmental awareness. For this purpose, photographic and informative material, as well as a video presentation depicting the airport's environmental programmes and targets, are available at the Environmental Information Center. In addition, AIA's Environmental Information Center can serve as a forum for the promotion of environmental initiatives of other organizations.
The "Environmental Information Center" is one of many environmental initiatives at Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos", the first Greek airport - and one of few airports in the world - with an Environmental Department that has been certified according to EN ISO 14001.
The Environmental Department of Athens International Airport S.A. currently employs thirteen qualified scientists and experts in the various environmental fields, and administrative staff. It handles issues related to the Environmental Management System, noise, air quality, water management,natural environment, waste management, resources management, local community projects, and issues relating to the protection of the cultural heritage of the greater area of Messogaia.
The Environmental Department of AIA was established from the first day of the company's operation in June 1996, which reflects the Airport Company's interest and respect to the environment, as well as its commitment to manage responsibly all the environmental aspects of airport operations.
