Athens International Airport EMERGENCY EXERCISE

Aiming at ensuring the high level of training, readiness and coordination among the Airport and all other parties involved in emergency situations, Athens International Airport organises emergency exercises on an annual basis.

The full scale Emergency Exercise "Aircraft Accident Off Airport", which is taking place today, Tuesday, March 16th, 2004, is organised within the framework of AIA's obligations arising from the regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). The following entities take part in this exercise:

  • HCAA/ Airport Authority (AIA)
  • Olympic Airlines
  • Airport Fire Corps
  • Hellenic Fire Corps
  • Hellenic Police
  • Joint Rescue Coordination Centre
  • Hellenic Coast Guard
  • EKAV (National Centre for Emergency Care)
  • Hellenic Red Cross - Volunteer Samaritans Corps
  • Prefecture of East Attica - Civil Protection
  • Airport Services of Emergency Medical Care

EXERCISE SCENARIO

On the basis of the scenario, an aircraft, during its approaching procedure to Athens International Airport, transmits a "May Day" call and attempts to perform ditching abeam Porto Rafti bay. From the bump into the sea, the wing is detached destroying the aircraft, which thereafter sinks, causing the death of 33 of the 55 passengers.

 

According to the scenario, is blocked by Hellenic Police forces restrict access to Porto Rafti, which create a safety zone to facilitate the responding forces to reach the area to handle the situation.

TSimilar exercises are organised on a regular basis by Athens International Airport S.A. in compliance with the international regulations, aiming at assessing the procedures provided for, and ensuring the high level of training of all parties involved as well as the sufficient preparation of all participants in the handling of emergency situations.
