On the occasion of the delivery of the first Airbus A380 for commercial services, Athens International Airport (AIA) announces that Airbus, Singapore Airlines, Emirates και Qantas have identified AIA as an en-route alternate airport for an A380 diversion.
Already, as of 2002, following closely the latest developments in the aviation sector, AIA joined the works of the A380 Airport Compatibility Group*, aiming to examine the operational needs of airports worldwide and to provide safe and top notch services during the A380 landing, parking and take-off.
Furthermore, based on the studies of the A380 Airport Compatibility Group, the European Aviation Safety Agency (E.A.S.A.) and the Federal Aviation Administration certified Airbus for A380 super jumbo operations to / from Sydney, LAX, London / Heathrow, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Rome / Fiumicino, Vienna and Athens airports.
