Athens International Airport - A day for Vravrona: Voluntary clean-up of the wetlands and release of wildlife to their natural environment!

Friday, June 5th, was celebrated as the World Environmental Day

Further to an Athens International Airport initiative, a group of 150 “environmental” volunteers - employees of the airport company and hotels SOFITEL / NOVOTEL together with representatives of the Hellenic Ornithological Society, the Greek Ministry of Culture, the volunteer rescue team from the Artemis municipality, the Hellenic Red Cross Samaritans, the companies  FORTES and J&P AVAX and ANIMA (Association for the Protection and Welfare of Wildlife) “rolled up their sleeves” and, armed with environmental care and resistance to… high temperatures,  participated in the second voluntary clean-up of the Vravrona wetlands, removing approximately 2,400 kgs of waste!

Following the clean-up, our volunteers gathered at the entrance of the archaeological Museum, where members of ANIMA released a buzzard, an owl, and 3 young hedgehogs, which had recuperated from injuries in ANIMA's care, back to their natural environment.

Finally, a guided tour of the Vravrona archaeological site was provided by the Ministry of Culture!
