June 5th is celebrated worldwide as “Environment Day”. Athens International Airport is once again actively participating in this year's celebration with the following initiatives:
Recycling Programme at the schools of Artemis For one more year, the airport is rewarding the schools of Artemis for their participation in the airport’s recycling programmes. Athens International Airport offers educational material, undertakes infrastructure works, and organises environmental activities. In 2010, the children collected 2.8 tonnes of paper and aluminium, while, since 2005, total recycled material exceeds 33 tonnes.
Two-day recycling for AIA employees In order to strengthen AIA’s recycling programme, on Thursday, June 2nd and Friday, June 3rd, the airport organizes a recycling competition for airport employees, aiming to collect as much recyclables as possible.
Tree planting at the Spata park In the framework of the International Day for the Environment and the anniversary of AIA’s 10 years of operation, there will be additional tree planting at the Spata park, which is currently being constructed by AIA (to be completed by September 2011).
Participation in satellite tracking of sea turtles In order to contribute to the protection of endangered species and their wetlands, AIA has adopted a “caretta – caretta” sea turtle, through the organisation Medasset and is able to track its migration via satellite (http://www.seaturtle.org/tracking/?project_id=445).
Scholarships for the University of the Aegean For the 9th consecutive year, Athens International Airport offers environmental management scholarships to 2 post-graduate students of the University of the Aegean (Department of Environmental Studies).
