Athens International Airport (AIA) organizes emergency exercises on a yearly basis, aiming at testing the Airport Emergency Plan (AEP), checking the effectiveness and efficiency of available resources and systems, as well as improving the preparedness of the involved personnel.

In this framework, a Partial Scale Emergency Exercise was successfully conducted on Friday, 20/11/2015, based on the scenario of “Aircraft Accident on Airport”, according to the stipulations of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

Apart from AIA, the following entities also participated:

  • Civil Aviation Authority / Airport Authority (AA)
  • Airport Hellenic Fire Corps (AHFC)

Scenario

On November 20, 2015, a Boeing 767-200F aircraft, of UPS/Star Air operated a scheduled freight flight from Athens to Munich Airport with seven souls on board. At 11:00 a.m. local time, during takeoff roll, sparks were observed coming from the left main gear, followed by an explosion.

The Pilot in Command (PIC) rejected the take-off and subsequently the aircraft exited the Runway and the Runway strip on a sloping surface. This caused the detachment of the main landing gear and the rupture of fuselage, followed by a fire.

Once the ATC Tower realized the emergency situation, activated the crash alarm for the mobilization of AHFC. The accident resulted in two fatalities (specifically, the two flight crew members), while the five passengers (Cargo loaders) were seriously injured”.
