A Trip to Wild life

"A new "ecological journey" at Athens International Airport in cooperation
with ARCTUROS (4/2 - 30/4/2010)

On Thursday, February 4th, Athens International Airport launches a “new scheduled flight” to destination “Wild life”, in cooperation with ARCTUROS, the civil society for the protection and management of wildlife and the environment. Airport visitors and passengers can take a journey through the photography exhibition “A Trip to Wild life”, which presents the wild life and mountainous areas where ARCTUROS focuses its action.

Nature photographers, volunteers, and ARCTUROS researchers introduce visitors to the “protagonists” of the Greek mountain forests, the lone bears and the misunderstood wolves, living in rare habitats, under the strong protection of Hellenic shepherd dogs.

A signage of bear traces will be leading visitors to this exciting “Trip to Wild life”, which provides rich information regarding the endangered wild life and natural environment, the actions undertaken for their preservation and harmonious co-existence with people.

A feature that could not be missing from the exhibition is most certainly the mythological association of ARCTUROS with the Vravrona area, where, in ancient times, young priestesses named “The Young She-Bears”, were worshipping the Goddess Artemis in the Goddess’s Sanctuary. Vravrona, an area of great ecological value, lies under the protection of Athens International Airport through a special environmental programme, whereas exact replicas of figurines representing the “Young She-Bears” can be found as permanent exhibits at the entrance to the departure halls of the airport’s main terminal building.

The exhibition will be on display at the airport for 3 months (February 4th – April 30th, 2010), in the airport’s Environmental Information Centre (Departures Level, Entrance 3). All airport visitors and passengers have access to the exhibition, which is open on a 24-hour basis.
