In 2023, Athens was directly connected with scheduled services with 156 destinations-cities (143 in 2022
and 157 in 2019) in 57 countries (50 in 2022 and 55 in 2019), operated by 66 carriers (66 in 2022 and 66 in
2019), including 26 low-cost carriers.
In the aftermath of the pandemic, Athens emerges as one of the most rapidly advancing players in airport
performance. In 2023, there was a notable resurgence in network developments, with the introduction of
18 New Destinations and the addition of ive new airlines providing services to Athens. Aegean Airlines
inaugurated routes connecting Athens to Baku, Bratislava, Chisinau, Dammam, Ljubljana, Marrakech,
Newcastle, Olbia, Palma Mallorca, Pisa, Seville, and Sharm el Sheikh. Volotea Airlines established a
connection between Athens and Cagliari. Air Mediterranean commenced services connecting Athens to
Damascus, Dusseldorf, and Stockholm. Play Airlines launched operations to Kelavik from Athens. Kuwait
was linked to Athens through both Aegean and Kuwait Airlines. Marathon Airlines, another newcomer
to the Airport, initiated routes connecting Benghazi and Bucharest to Athens, and inally, WizzAir Malta
established connections between Athens and Milan, Tel Aviv, and Tirana.
The recovery of Athens' network and restoration of connectivity, coupled with the remarkable growth in
passenger traic and excellence in aviation marketing strategy, received further recognition at "ROUTES
EUROPE 2023”, one of the most signiicant aviation events, where it was voted by airlines as the top airport
in Europe in the highly competitive category of airports with more than 20 million passengers annually.
