The decision of the Greek government to liberate the port market and award access to a second operator, PCT, led to extended strikes at the port bringing the project to a halt. However, the new player is now operating and offers additional capacity, creating certainty that this type of transit business will gradually rise to high levels.  The Road Feeder Service (RFS) project In order to meet the requirements of various international lead carriers, the cargo community has evaluated the possibility of a road feeder service that would connect the international markets with Thessaloniki and the Balkan States via Athens Airport in one and two days respectively. Encouraging such traffic will gradually render Athens a regional hub and gateway of Southeastern Europe. The Athens RFS project is expected to be launched as soon as demand reaches the critical volume required for the service to run efficiently.  The Airport Export Initiative (AEI) The cargo community has decided to streamline and strengthen actions in order to attract additional cargo volumes through synergies and common effort. The emphasis is now put on export flows: Greek quality products are already distributed worldwide but new niche markets suitable for airfreight are also sought. Our new initiative, the Airport Export Initiative, is coordinated by a dedicated sub-committee that is comprised by the airline, GSA, forwarder representatives and AIA. The effort is also backed by Airport Customs and supported by external parties. The AEI aims at generating awareness to the wider export market (including but not limited to chambers of commerce, embassies, export associations, etc.) regarding the competitive advantages of air transport through AIA. In the context of the above, airfreight is promoted as an alternative transportation solution supporting the efforts of the Greek exporters to expand to new markets. In addition, the aim of AEI is to offer new clients a one-stop-shop solution, swift response time and an efficient service. Next steps include individual meetings, presentations to various associations, and articles in the cargo press as well as the organization of relevant workshops at the airport. page 12
