Axios Delta

From the mouth of the Gallikos river to
the elli dam, the axios lighthouse and
the riverine forest, the 22.000 decares
of the axios river delta are home to a
plethora of species and are an important
habitat for many wild animals and birds.
including the herons and the white-tailed
eagle, during bird migration season the
area hosts approximately 200 different
species of waterbirds and rare birds,
while the numerous otter and wild horse
populations are landmarks of the wider
axios area. | Από τις εκβολές του Γαλλικού
ποταμού μέχρι το φράγμα Έλλης, το Φάρο
του Αξιού και το παραποτάμιο δάσος
του, τα 22.000 στρέμματα του Δέλτα του
Αξιού ποταμού φιλοξενούν ένα πλήθος
οικοτόπων κι ένα σημαντικό βιότοπο για
πολλά είδη άγριων ζώων και πουλιών. Μαζί
με τους ερωδιούς και τους θαλασσαετούς,
την εποχή της μετανάστευσης η περιοχή
φιλοξενεί περίπου 200 είδη υδρόβιων
και σπάνιων πτηνών, ενώ οι πληθυσμοί
της βίδρας και τα άγρια άλογα του Αξιού
αποτελούν τα σύμβολα της περιοχής.
