THE TURN AROUND OF EUROPE's GLOBAL CITY
London is facing an unprecedented period of
growth and change in the 21st century. Covering
over 1,500 km2, its population of 7.5 million is
relatively thinly spread, with a gross population
density of 4,795 people per km2, making it less
dense than other megacities such as New York,
Paris or Tokyo. After decades in which it was
haemorrhaging people, London has turned
around. The forecasts now point to a sustained
and substantial population increase, much of it
through migration. | Το Λονδίνο ζει μια πρωτο-
φανή περίοδο ανάπτυξης και αλλαγής. Η πόλη,
έκτασης περίπου 1.500 km2 και πληθυσμού που
δεν ξεπερνά τα 7,5 εκατ., είναι σχετικά αραιο-
κατοικημένη, ενώ η πυκνότητα πληθυσμού εί-
ναι περίπου 4.795 κάτοικοι ανά km2 – αριθμός
που είναι πολύ μεγαλύτερος σε Νέα Υόρκη, Πα-
ρίσι και Τόκιο. Έπειτα από δεκαετίες πληθυσμια-
κής στασιμότητας το Λονδίνο αλλάζει τακτική και
πλέον οι προβλέψεις μιλούν για σημαντική αύ-
ξηση πληθυσμού, κυρίως λόγω μετανάστευσης.
